Implementation of the Equator Principles

Mandate of the Equator Principles Reviewers (e.g. responsibilities and staffing)

The Equator Principles Reviewing Team is formed in order to identify whether the transaction falls within the scope of the Equator Principles framework. The Equator Principles Reviewing Team shall review and thereby validate that applicable projects comply with the Equator Principles. As being adherent to Equator Principles we shall only provide finance to projects that meet the relevant requirements of Principles 1-10.

Roles of the Equator Principles Reviewers, business lines, and senior management in the transaction review process

The Equator Principles Reviewing Team consists of the following units;

– Business Area (a dedicated person from the business side, preferably within the sustainable finance area),

– Group Sustainability (expertise and advise),

– First line risk management (compliance and credit risk – ensure compliance with the principles).

Incorporation of the Equator Principles in credit and risk management policies and procedures

In Swedbank’s directive on sustainability in lending, the Equator Principles constitute part of the internal guidelines for risk assessment. The process clarifies that the bank’s business areas are responsible for identifying potential transactions that should be reviewed.

From 2019 Swedbank completed several internal preparation activities in order to ensure compliance of the Equator Principles. Examples of activities completed are: integrated Equator Principles into the corporate sustainability analysis conducted on credits over 8mSEK in Sweden and 0,8mEUR in the Baltic countries, internal communication and notifications within the business areas about the commitment and process to be used, integrated Equator Principles into our internal directive (i.e. steering document) on sustainability in lending, and developed an internal guideline on how to ensure compliance with the Equator Principles including the review process conducted by the Equator Principles Reviewing Team.
