Implementation of the Equator Principles

Garanti BBVA has maintained environmental and social risk management processes within its credit framework since 2011. In 2012, the Bank established its Environmental and Social Impact Assessment Process (ESIAP) to conduct enhanced environmental and social due diligence in line with internationally recognized standards, including the IFC Performance Standards and the World Bank Environmental and Social Standards. Following its becoming an Equator Principles Financial Institution (EPFI) on 16 July 2025, Garanti BBVA incorporated the requirements of EP4 into this established framework through the Equator Principles Procedure and related implementation guidelines.

The Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) Team within the Sustainability Department serves as the Equator Principles Review function. The team consists of three members, two of whom are designated as Equator Principles Reviewers. The ESIA Team is responsible for environmental and social due diligence, project categorization, assessment of compliance with the Equator Principles and oversight of their implementation.

Relevant business lines identify transactions within the scope of the Equator Principles and perform the initial screening. The ESIA Team conducts the environmental and social assessment and provides its conclusions to the relevant Credit Committees and Credit Approval Bodies, which incorporate the assessment into financing decisions. Through the Equator Principles Procedure, EP4 requirements have been integrated into the Bank’s credit approval, environmental and social risk assessment, monitoring and reporting procedures. In preparation for the first year of EP4 implementation, the Bank updated its internal procedures and implementation documents and provided awareness and training activities to the relevant functions.
